COVID-19 Update: Why I'm not opening back up just yet
I was crushed when my business that I’ve worked so hard on was suddenly on hold. My spring was looking kick-ass but there’s nothing like a catastrophic world event affecting millions of people to knock the wind out of your sails. 😢
Yesterday, I received some clear guidance on re-opening for photography businesses from the governor’s office. As of May 11, within a strict set of health guidelines, I will be allowed to open again.
However, after some soul searching and talking it over with my family, I’ve decided to not open back up—take on any new client sessions—for a little while longer. 😬 Many people I love have significant health risks and I honestly can’t bear the thought of my actions contributing to the spread of this disease.
This push to re-open businesses quickly isn’t for my sake or yours. My plan is to stay closed in solidarity with the most vulnerable members of our society. I believe in people over profit. 💛
Like millions of other Americans, I’ve been unemployed since mid-March but unlike many, I can hold out longer—luckily, I have some savings built up, we still have health insurance through my husband’s job, we’re not currently at risk of losing our home.
I know that the place I’m needed most right now is at home. Hazel’s preschool is still closed and being her mom/teacher/personal assistant honestly feels like a full time job—one I never ever wanted to do but I’m actually pretty good at. We assume at the end of the summer, she’ll be starting kindergarten. 🤞 Rather than spend the summer out with clients, shouting through a mask and coming home an anxious mess about whether we were safe enough, I’m choosing to spend a little extra time at home with my family.
I hope to re-launch better than ever when the time is right. I have big ideas for how to pivot my business to better serve the community and get back to contributing financially to my family. I’m terrified for the future but also kind of hopeful? If you can wait for me, I’d love to work with you!
