Maybellene's at-home creative shoot | Murray, KY kids photography

I've written previously about Hazel and Maybellene's best friendship and how I thrust myself upon her mom, Ann, at story time because she had cute glasses and I was determined to make a mom friend that day.  Instead, how about some brief tips on photographing little kids?  I'm by no means an expert, but I do have about 10,000 photos of Hazel on my own and many of my clients have been under the age of 10.

Robyn Pizzo Photo's 5 Tips on Getting Great Shots of Your Kids

  1. Get down on their level.
Occasionally I like to shoot from high above to get a "parent's eye view" but more often than not, I am down on the ground crouching and crawling and doing whatever contortion it takes to get my camera at their eye level.

Kayla and Max | Lighthouse Landing

Kayla is one of my BFF's and even though we don't see each other nearly enough, when we are back together, it is like no time has passed.  I was thrilled and truthfully a bit nervous when she told me Max wanted to get some pictures taken of the two of them to help remember their time together in this part of the world. In just a couple of days, they're moving to Germany together! Max is German, Kayla is getting her PhD in German history and they are totally adorable together.

Gritty and pretty | Murray, KY downtown family session

The struggle was so real in trying to narrow down the photos from this session.  Since there were so many cute ones, I decided to separate it out into two blogs.  I'm sure you guys don't mind, right?

I love love the setting for these pictures.  I think they just feel fun, fresh, and cool.  Heidi said "no fields" and my heart burst.

"I do" Re-Do

I can't speak for every photographer, but "so this might sound weird..." is music to my ears when it comes to new ideas for style, location, outfits, etc. One of my life philosophies that carries over into my photography is "why would you want to do the same thing as everyone else?" I could have jumped across the computer and hugged Heidi when I read her email that said she didn't want to take photos in a field because that's what everyone does. In Murray, fields are plentiful and beautiful, but I think it's more fun to try and see the beauty in unexpected places.

Johnson Family | Murray, KY

This adorable family session came together in only one week! Amelie is getting braces on next week so we were on a bit of a time crunch. See Laurel, the little sister? The last time the Johnsons had portraits done, she was only 4 months old. It was definitely time for an updated family photograph!

Daniel and Leigh are both MSU professors and I absolutely love getting to shoot Murray State families. It's great to get to see them outside the office! I ask my families to fill out a questionnaire so I can get to know them a little better before we shoot. Leigh's one word to describe her fam was "funny" which I think is clear in these photos. Amelie's photobomb of her parents' picture was priceless.  My goal is always to capture photos that people would want to print and hang on the wall and ones that they'll look back on years later and still laugh at and smile about because their personalities shine through. Most importantly the whole experience should be FUN especially when kids are involved. If all else fails, bribes of ice cream seem to do the trick!
